Volksvermogen was established to manage the participations and shares of the former “Volksspaarwezen,” now vdk bank. This made the bank more liquid and helped avoid conflicts of interest, a model that was later made legal for all banks in 1935.
In the 1930s to 1960s, Volksvermogen focused mainly on its holdings, including De Volksverzekering and a number of foreign investments. Starting in 1964, Volksvermogen continued to build up its stake in vdk bank, which eventually led to the most important holding in the portfolio. In 2002, the stake in De Volksverzekering was sold. Investing in microfinance also became an important pillar. Together with vdk bank, Volksvermogen co-founded Incofin cvso, a pioneer in providing microcredit to entrepreneurs in emerging economies.
